This year was no less than the 45th Salon Rétromobile. And as has become tradition, RM Sotheby’s were host to another of their extraordinary auctions in Paris – in fact their 7th.
Yours truly managed to slip in to the very chic temporary “orangery” of RM Sotheby’s on the Place Vauban having been invited by the friend of a friend. Thank you Mark.
The selection of exotica was mind-blowing, but as always: “If you need to ask the price…you almost certainly cannot afford it”. The estimates are much more fun, but these were not in anciens francs (1/65th of a Euro).
The event was pristinely organised and although I did not disturb the gentils organisateurs, I was pleased to be able to open bonnets and doors to peer inside cars usually reserved for immortals.
While not my personal area of expertise, I was particularly impressed by the trio of Delahaye 135’s which were being auctioned from the Dayez Collection. So grand and exquisite…
While most of the cars were clearly ornamental, I was impressed that RM Sotheby’s did start up quite a few cars to remind us that not all the cars were sculptural. However, sadly, many cars were clearly intended for “avez-vous vu mes possessions?” rather than for being used.
Some of the virtually new cars proposed for sale intrigued me: why sell an unused car?
Are times rather harder than expected for a certain Middle Eastern royal family and the footballers or have they decided to listen to my heroine, Greta Thunberg?
My personal favourite – perhaps because it’s a classic which can still be driven as intended – was the Porsche 924 Carrera GTS.
