The End of the Road – An Announcement

As we come to the close of another turbulent year, sadly we also come to the end of the road for the International edition of ViaRETRO.

It’s become increasingly clear that we are losing the fight to attract and engage readers in the face of bigger, better resourced classic car websites. This has not been helped by having a dwindling pool of writers to call upon,  forcing us to reduce our publishing schedule from daily to rarely more than one or two pieces a week.

We’re grateful to those of you who kept reading and occasionally commenting, and we hope you enjoyed what you read. We shall keep the site up so that anyone who wishes to access our archive of over 1300 posts can do so, and occasional English-language pieces will appear on our Scandinavian parent site, www.viaretro.dk.

Meanwhile we wish you the very best for the coming year, with many opportunities to enjoy your classics!

I've loved cars ever since growing up through the 1960s and 70s, with German and Italian cars of that era my absolute favourites. Not one to get my hands dirty, preferring to pay experts to do the work. But while my love of classics is based primarily on their looks, it’s nevertheless a deep love. My current classics are a yellow 1975 BMW 2002tiiLux known as 'die Zitrone', a red '82 Mercedes-Benz 280CE, and I have finally fulfilled a dream of owning an early Porsche 911, a 1972 911T - my classics world is complete.

  1. Oh dear, good luck with your future projects, this has been one of the most sensible and readable things about the love of interesting cars, whether extraordinary or just becauser they weren’t! Pleased to have posted a few times and get positive feedback and comments. Sorry to see you go, take care, Bob Buckby.

  3. Why not just publish your stories on the parent site, If you enjoy writing them?
    Of cause it will not be a local audience, but going out on a limb here but every reader on the parent site is fully capable of reading and commenting in English.
    And your stories bring a different perspective to the danish site, we are a finite population here.
    The British classic vehicle culture is much more developed, broad and inclusive than the danish so we can still learn a lot.
    I mostly have to look outside Denmark for my fix’s and I guess most of us still trawl through the British car ads.
    Further for a site like viaretro to avoid fatigue, it cannot be a bad thing to have more contributing quality writers. It is not much I as a readers contribute (except occasionally provoking Claus to write a story, when I start questioning a statement etc.)

    @niels V – yes, Claus, Anders and I have discussed this a little and that is what probably will happen (and I hinted at that in my note above) – we’re considering my reporting for the Scandi site on some of the bigger events here eg Goodwood, NEC, Hampton Court, the odd Bicester Scramble. Maybe 8-10 pieces a year. I’m certainly ready to do it!

  5. Well, this sux…
    But I understand , sorta. It does get tiresome having to always come up with something to write, and then getting little response. Plus, all the BS rained down on us from “tptb” has fatigued the population ,causing the attendant demoralisation, depression, death and sickness…as designed. When life itself is tiresome, its hard to get too enthused about stuff.
